The goal of alimony is for the recipient to maintain a similar lifestyle to the one that he or she enjoyed during the marriage. Gender is not a factor in the determination of if alimony is granted and how much will be granted. The former husband is just as entitled to the award of alimony as the former wife if he meets the qualifications required to an award of alimony. Alimony is based on the need of the receiving spouse and the ability to pay of the giving spouse.
